Classic with nails: See here how we varnish, stretch and handcraft a Dutch Art Giclée Canvas Reproduction in our unique style classic with nails. After stretching the Giclée canvas print on 2 cm thick stretcher bars, we finish the sides of this reproduction of The Garden of the Asylum at Saint-Remy by Vincent van Gogh in a traditional way; we use custom-made nails and hammer them in by hand for that old fashioned look.

Giclée printing: Our reproductions are printed on museum-quality canvas of 380g. We use a Giclée print technique that guarantees over 100 years of colour permanence. The HDR inks are sprayed on the canvas layer by layer, with 800 nozzles per colour x 10 channels for a total of 8000 nozzles.

Varnish: We then apply several coats of varnish by hand to make the colours come to life and to protect against moisture and UV light. The canvas is stretched by hand on stretcher bars made with timber from sustainable forestry.

The Garden of the Asylum at Saint-Remy

This reproduction on canvas of The Garden of the Asylum at Saint-Remy by Vincent van Gogh is made in close cooperation with the Krӧller-Müller Museum, where the original painting is hanging in the Van Gogh Gallery. After a year in Arles in which Van Gogh experienced mental problems he admitted himself on the 8th of May 1889, at the asylum Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in saint-rémy. At first he can't leave the grounds. Within the walls of the asylum there is a beautiful garden with pine trees, which Vincent is inspired by and he paints many new studies and motifs. For this artwork, Van Gogh chooses an unusual viewpoint, next to the wall of the hospital.

The diagonal path with a stone bench gives the landscape a spatial effect. He expressed the abundant flowering bushes and trees with thickly painted brushstrokes. There is a huge variety of shapes and colours, and at the same time the composition has great depth and structure. Van Gogh writes to his sister Wil what colours mean to him: "We need good cheer and happiness, hope and love. The uglier, older, meaner, sicker, poorer I get, the more I wish to take my revenge by doing brilliant colour, well arranged, resplendent".
