Classic with nails: See here how we varnish, stretch and handcraft a Dutch Art Giclée Canvas Reproduction in our unique style classic with nails. After stretching the Giclée canvas print on 2 cm thick stretcher bars, we finish the sides of this reproduction of The Potato Eaters by Vincent van Gogh in a traditional way; we use custom-made nails and hammer them in by hand for that old fashioned look.

Giclée printing: Our reproductions are printed on museum-quality canvas of 380g. We use a Giclée print technique that guarantees over 100 years of colour permanence. The HDR inks are sprayed on the canvas layer by layer, with 800 nozzles per colour x 10 channels for a total of 8000 nozzles.

Varnish: We then apply several coats of varnish by hand to make the colours come to life and to protect against moisture and UV light. The canvas is stretched by hand on stretcher bars made with timber from sustainable forestry.

The Potato Eaters

This reproduction on canvas of The Potato Eaters by Vincent van Gogh is made in close cooperation with the Krӧller-Müller Museum, where the original painting is hanging in the Van Gogh Gallery. Prior to starting this painting, Van Gogh makes over a hundred portrait studies of farmworkers. He is preparing himself for his first large painting of peasant life in Brabant. He sees this painting as a kind of test of his mastery. He wants to prove that he is on his way to becoming an accomplished figure painter. This painting precedes the final version and has virtually the same composition, but the layout is a little bit more sketchy. Van Gogh makes the drawings and studies at the home of the peasant family De Groot-van Rooij. He does not want to make precise portraits, but is seeking to reflect the primitive nature of the hard and tough peasant life. The potato eaters is seen as the most ambitious painting of Van Gogh's Dutch period.
