Old Woman and Boy with Candles

This reproduction on canvas of Old Woman and Boy by Peter Paul Rubens is made in cooperation with the Mauritshuis Museum, where the original painting is hanging. An old woman looks dreamily to the front, shielding her eyes from the flickering candlelight. She seems hardly aware of the boy who is looking over her shoulder and trying to light his candle from hers. The candlelight brings a rosy glow to the scene and creates a strong contrast between light and dark. This contrast is reminiscent of the revolutionary style of the Italian painter Caravaggio. Rubens had got to know his work in Italy, and this painting was one of the earliest Caravaggisti works in The Netherlands. Rubens probably made this painting for his own pleasure, as he never sold it.

He also painted it on a panel made of several scraps of wood, which is something he wouldn't have done if he intended to sell it. The way we should interpret this scene is explained by Rubens himself in a print he published later on. The text under the print, refers to a passage from a book by the classical poet Ovid: 'the Art of Love'. Ovid urges us to take the opportunity to love while we are still young and beautiful so that we don't look back in regret later. So the old woman is musing on her past loves. She is too old for new adventures and now it's the boys turn. Filled with expectation he is ready to seize the light as his own.
