About the original artwork
The Bull

This bull is the figurehead of realistic Dutch painting. Flies buzz around the beast's back, the saliva runs out of its mouth and on the right is a cow pie. This painting by Paulus Potter was the main attraction of the Mauritshuis in the nineteenth century. Even more than the paintings of Rembrandt or Vermeer. Experts spoke of a miracle piece, visitors praised the stunning realism. But appearances can be deceiving because Potter's young bull turns out to be a not so realistic creature. The neck and horns are those of a biennial animal, the teeth are that of a three- or four-year-old beast, and the abdomen is much less muscular than the chest. For this bull, Potter used several sketches he made outside in the field. He combined them into this painting at home in his studio. So here we see a bull composed by the painter. Potter lived on the outskirts of The Hague and Rijswijk was not far from there. The village church can be seen in the distance. Initially, Potter only wanto to paint the standing bull and the recumbent cow. He added the farmer, the sheep, the tree and the landscape during the process. He created three additional pieces to create space. The bull is the largest painting Potter made. Contemporaries must have been amazed because this size was usually reserved for Biblical or mythological scenes or large group portraits. Only in Holland did artists present something as everyday as cattle in such a grand manner.

Care for your product

Always handle the ceramic gloss tiles with care. They are for interior decorative use. You can clean your tile tableau with a soft cloth and a non-abrasive cleaning product like glassex. Do not hang the tableau in direct sunlight or fading will occur over the years. These tiles are not suitable to mount in a hot area, e.g. above an Aga or behind a stove.
