Vincent van Gogh - Courtesan
The Courtesan, envisioned by Vincent van Gogh, captures the essence of traditional Japanese artistry with its depiction of a graceful courtesan. This work by Vincent van Gogh is inspired by a print by the Japanese artist Kesai Eisen. In 1886 the image was the cover of the magazine Paris illustré. Vincent copied the Japanese lady and added bright colors and strong contours. He also added a pond full of water lilies, bamboo stems, cranes and frogs to Eisen's existing work. The crane and the frog also have a hidden meaning; in France these were popular synonyms for prostitutes.
