Starry Night

In Starry Night Vincent depicts a dreamy interpretation of the view from his room in the asylum in Saint-Rémy. Though Van Gogh revisited this scene in his work on several occasions, Starry Night is the only nocturnal study of the view. Around 23 May 1889, Vincent wrote to his brother Theo: “Through the iron-barred window I can make out a square of wheat in an enclosure, above which in the morning I see the sun rise in its glory." Although Van Gogh observes the stars at night, he actually painted during the day.
