Pink Peach Trees (Souvenir de Mauve)

In the spring of 1888, while living in Arles, Vincent van Gogh was deeply inspired by the blossoming fruit trees. He painted them almost daily, producing fourteen paintings along with several sketches and drawings in just a few weeks. Pink Peach Trees was one of the works he considered most successful from this period.

On the evening he completed the painting, Van Gogh received a letter from his sister with the news that Anton Mauve, his cousin-in-law and former teacher, had passed away. Mauve had introduced Van Gogh to oil and watercolour painting.

Moved by the news, Van Gogh dedicated the painting to Mauve, writing to his brother Theo:
"I wrote on my painting: 'Souvenir de Mauve, Vincent & Théo'. It seemed to me that in memory of Mauve, we needed something both tender and cheerful, rather than something somber."
