About the original artwork
Country Road in Provence by night
The cypress has always been the ultimate symbol of the Provence for Vincent van Gogh. In a letter to his brother Theo he says: "The cypresses still preoccupy me. I'd like to do something with them like I did with the Sunflowers, because I am surprised that no one has yet portrayed the cypresses as I see them. They are beautiful as regards lines and proportions, like an Egyptian obelisk. And the green has such a distinguished quality".

Country road in Provence by night was one of the last paintings he made before leaving the asylum at Saint-Rémy. He composed it at his own discretion (it was not a real existing landscape), maybe he intended it to be a last reminder of Saint-Rémy. During his time at the asylum Van Gogh experiments with his use of colour and brushwork. In many of his works he uses graceful forms and swirling lines. The short, rhythmic wavy brushstrokes placed side by side give this painting great dimensions.
