Young Sick Bacchus

The Young Sick Bacchus is an early self-portrait by Caravaggio, painted around 1593. We can recognise Bacchus, the god of wine and festivity, by the crown of ivy leaves on his head. This was a sacred plant, believed to prevent him from intoxication. However, Bacchus does not look as festive as he is normally portrayed. When Caravaggio painted this work he had just moved to Rome, but was struck by illness which incapacitated him for six months. It was most likely that he made this self-portrait during his illness.

This is shown by the yellowish color of Bacchus’ skin and white of the eye, his blueish lips and the decaying grapes he holds. However, his sensual pose and the presence of ripe peaches and grapes, indicates that a possible recovery lies ahead.

Care for your product

Always handle the ceramic gloss tiles with care. They are for interior decorative use. You can clean your tile tableau with a soft cloth and a non-abrasive cleaning product like glassex. Do not hang the tableau in direct sunlight or fading will occur over the years. These tiles are not suitable to mount in a hot area, e.g. above an Aga or behind a stove.
