Varnish: We then apply several coats of varnish by hand to make the colours come to life and to protect against moisture and UV light. The canvas is stretched by hand on stretcher bars made with timber from sustainable forestry.

The Syndics

This reproduction on canvas of The Syndics by Rembrandt van Rijn is made with the greatest possible care to ensure that the colours are very close to the original painting that is hanging in the Rijksmuseum. An artistic challenge for every artist is to paint a large picture with a complex composition involving multiple figures. With Rembrandt and Velázquez's paintings it is as if we are looking at a still image from a film. Both contain many spontaneous movements, such as the man rising from his chair in Rembrandt's work. The scene comes to life, raising only a single question: what happens next?
